A world, perhaps initially Earthlike, perhaps not quite so much, is under a strange invasion. Another plane, another place, is erupting and forcing itself out to ... conquer and 'terraform' the lands around it.
Welcome to the Breach; a place that's trying to be another world.
It's hostile to humans or to humanlike beings. Despite that, there's been an attempt to create a forward base there, and a place to fight back from. Those entering the Breach know they may not go back. While within the base itself is a little bubble of normality, the realm outside it requires those who explore it to give up who and what they were.
...In ways that involve crazy alien biotech.
Anyone who enters the region gains alien traits; those exploring it are given them on purpose. Everyone reacts differently to having alien factors introduced into their system: some gain sensory abilities, some gain more combat and survival ones. Visions of newbies who've just had their initial ... idk, induction, whatever you'd call it, base level modifications, being led out into the weirdness of the Breach space to ... have their stuff start to awaken...
I get the feeling that things through there, especially further in, basically run on the sort of cross dimensional physical and biological laws that can be described as "/muffled scientist sobbing". Weird radiation and energy fields, and the local biology relies on them? BS that corrodes a lot of metals exposed to it. Strange gases. Can send machines in but they're trashed when they come out. So at the end of the day, there's nothing for it but to send in volunteers...
There are survivors still within the area. Ones changed by their exposure and experiences. Those who tried to flee - who managed to leave successfully - didn't last long on the outside...
