Crazy cyberbiotech nonsense, probably with some mystic nonsense in there too.
One of those 'fighting some mysterious threat from blah blah another dimension or world or idk' scenarios. Characters outfitted with living weapons; symbiotic stuff. Kill La Kill meets Venom meets DDS. Yeah, here comes the creepy factor.
The weapon being is sentient. It doesn't present so much as a 'costume' as, well, weaponry or enhancements? IDK.
And the more the user and weapon get stronger together, the more the user ... is changed by it. Stuff proceeds to get weird.
Insert big old narratives on holding to humanity, or 'they who hunt monsters' mindsets.
The weapon-beings don't have their own personalities or minds until they join with a human. They're basically ... using the OS off their partnerhost's brain? Something. So they pick up personality traits and things from there, too... sometimes, this can mean 'basically being their Shadow'.
So there's an element of 'accepting the Shadow or dark side' to the final stages of growth and getting stronger, blah blah. Accepting what's happened, rather than trying to fight it off.
...some unlucky so and sos basically get their old selves wiped clean.
If it goes well, you're stronger for it. If it doesn't... think about the mooks from DDS. Minus cannibalism. Plus loss of identity.
