dreaminghiveA semi-reboot of P4 based on some more of the influences brought in by P5 and taking another look at the original themes.

Central themes/keywords:

“Being an anomaly in society’s eyes doesn’t make you bad or wrong on its own”
“Don’t settle for what’s expected just because it is expected. There’s a place you can make yours. Whether that’s here or elsewhere? That’s up to you to decide - explore your options.”
Self-assertion and determination. Taking “Pursuing My True Self, I am thou, thou art I” to a more logical conclusion. It’s good to be happy with what you are, but it’s up to you to decide what that is, and if society says that’s wrong? Is the fault in what you’re doing, or in what it’s doing? More P5-esque levels of ‘looking at injustices’. (Though that said, this is still Japan and the community/group flavour is a thing.)
Protag swap: Kanji and Chie are in the ‘gender selection of protagonist’ box. Because RP. \o/ The kids who don’t fit into their neatly assigned categories get the chance to shine! On their non-protag route, they’re basically in Ryuji’s shoes; Naoki and Yukiko share the potential 'Ann' slot.
The overall aesthetic of the 'game' is Victorian/gothic horror type business. More darkly glamorous than B-movie monster nonsense. There’s only *one* Igor here, dammit.
Rain and fog are still part of the theming - it was a dark and stormy night…
Velvet Room might be a clock tower, ticking on down until midnight. Who’s the attendant - do we have Margaret or someone else?
The central hub world is a castle region, which flips between European and Japanese vibes, plus possibly other influences. The people of Inaba are protective of what they consider Normality. The corridors are misty and damaged, and there are areas to it that fall into the Mementos/Tartarus model of “growing deeper and more complex as time goes on”. Exploring the newer sectors of the castle will lead to the entries to the different “dungeon” sections, and some sections of the castle can’t be reached via jumping in at one given spot.
The kids’ castle diving attire basically reflects the fact that this is a damaged and cast off bunch of young people: as with the Phantom Thieves, there’s a ‘rebel image’ element to their outfits. Their gear tends towards theedgelord dark and gothic with a running theme of visibly damaged elements - dramatic tears and the likes, though not in the ‘clothing damage trope’ sense. More fashionably distressed.
Not jumping into any TVs. This all has a more historical vibe?? Possibly mirrored surfaces take their place. Mirrored surfaces are Rad. Reflections in the dark~
The group’s initial Persona lineup focuses around classic gothic monster figures. The second tier are mythical monstrous deities and characters.
As for the end bosses? Well, they're changed up too.
Izanami as benefactor: Marie is in the party from an early stage. There are dark things in this world, people can make mistakes, but rejecting them only leads to pain and suffering.
Izanagi as The Authority. The world was created to follow a certain path. I’d say ‘chaos vs order’ but Yaldy is a thing and is very order.
Izanagi, as the enemy in this setting, feels that the people of the world have become … corrupted? Messed up? Touched by death and decay. That they lie to themselves and don’t appreciate the gift he fought to give them. So, in a small nowhere town that no-one gives a crap about…
He’s testing a thing out.
Restart. Let them see who they truly are and see the world for what it is.
Unfortunately, the young man he chose to work through, a new arrival in the little town, made a bad decision. Panicking, using his new powers against a bored looking cop… typical Hanamura style...
...and Adachi realises the opportunity that’s landed in his lap. Why not befriend a kid with some interesting powers? Liven things up a bit around here?
Still, it spirals rapidly out of either of their control…
