You are a Nightmare Knight.

It's not clear how it happened: one dream, one night, things were out of the ordinary… well, by standards of your dreams. A darkness, a creature out of nowhere, attacking you… but you prevailed over it, either alone or with help. So to speak.
Because now, you are that creature - it has become part of you. In your dreaming life, at least. Your true dreaming form is strange, mystic and monstrous, maybe bestial or demonic, but your mind remains untouched. You can explore a world created by the dreams around you, enter into the dreams of others, and even spend your waking life as it was before this happened. There are others like you, too, allies, friends, or rivals...

But this comes with a potential responsibility. Wild nightmares are out of control, not unlike the one that struck you to begin with. More than just the subconscious fears and resentment built in any mind, something more dangerous… something that could destroy a dreamer from within.
Will you take up the challenge? … Or just go back to sleep?

----

Knights are shapeshifters, though their natural appearance in a dream is obviously inhuman; they can take on a human-passing form with a little practice, or something even weirder and wilder with more experience. Probably a lot of variance in Knights' basic dream form. From "funny colours and pointy ears" to "dude you're a dragon" or whatever.
Maybe some guidelines? Not so much species as ... IDK? It's probably reflective of their inner self in some way, insert Persona jokes. More human forms reflect their self image more. (Link to the Past was an inspiration, OK.)

Cool powers are definitely part of the deal. While a powerful Knight might have some traces of a reality bender to them, that's not the norm. A base power set links into the initial nightmare that they defeated to gain their Knight status.

There's a meta space outside of individual dreams that reflects the general state of things people are dreaming of, and an individual dream space for any given person. If a Knight retreats into their own dream space, it's effectively shutting down their Nightmare status and returning them to a regular dreamer, though they can be fished out of there or can just have their Nightmare reactivate naturally. Maybe the next night, maybe it takes longer... (also hiatus excuse from RP PoV)
Poking around others’ dreams or different regions of dreamspace leads to different missions.

Evil Nightmares might be trying to steal human bodies to cause havoc, to keep them perpetually sleeping for … reasons, or other problems.
