This one's just a fragment of a thing from a setting. Probably not enough to stand on its own. (Contains: weird mutant mages and the likes.)

In the world of (insertnamehere), there are three classes of magic users: low mages, rising mages, and high mages. All draw their power from the same source, the ambient aether/mana/force that permeates the world. However, using it takes its toll on a mage's body in a very direct sense.

Low mages are relatively unaffected. They use it hands-on rarely enough, though they might study it intently; they may also make heavy usage of magical apparatus to control it at some distance. Still, even that has its effect on them; they may tire easily, suffer from the likes of anaemia, and you'll never see a mage who looks like they've had enough to eat. But for a low mage, these are controllable side effects for working with the powers they do.

A rising mage has decided that working with magic in such limited ways is not for them, for all they face what could be considered a harsh penalty for doing so. They take magic into their own body, and it eats away at them in a more dramatic fashion than the maladies a low mage might suffer. Parts of their forms are outright consumed by the aether, and they may use magical or mundane craftsmanship to replace these or to simply prevent aether from draining away as their biological systems adapt to its presence. Even without much physical damage, they may show aether cracks/veins/'tron lines' on their features. To continue to push their magical workings is to risk their own death, but... it's a risk they'll take.

A high mage has gone through all this and survived. Whether they count as human, or as the person they were before, is debatable. What 'body' they have is basically an artificially created shell around the aether that is their 'self', allowing them to more easily interact with less powerful beings.

(It might be possible to compare Edward Elric to a rising mage and Alphonse to a high... give or take certain details. It's an approximation.)

Low mages are by far the most common and most accepted; while there are fewer rising mages, they maintain close contacts with one another and actively seek out low mages who may be considering starting their own rise. They need each other's support and contacts given their situation.
High mages, however, have their own agendas... (which I don't know, OK, this thing is only just starting.)

Rising and high mages, by necessity, dress in highly concealing fashions; a mask of some variety is almost a trademark of a magic user. It's far from unknown for low mages to adopt similar styles to try and seem more powerful (though those who think that rising magic is foolish might do pretty much the opposite!)
